Learning Forward has released a set of instructional tools that will help education practitioners determine if instructional materials meet the needs of English learners. The tools are intended for those developing, procuring, or using instructional materials and for those who want to create better learning conditions and academic outcomes for English learners. One set of tools focuses on instructional materials for mathematics and one for English language arts.
Learning Forward has made a strong commitment to supporting professional learning on the use of high-quality instructional materials. Troubling research shows that English learners tend to have less access to intellectually rich, grade-level content and instructional materials. To help schools and districts assess whether their materials are really providing the content English learners need and deserve, the English Learners Success Forum developed these two tools, which first appeared in the April issue of The Learning Professional.
