The Center on Great Teachers and Leaders (GTL Center) has released a host of information on its new Social and Emotional Learning School website to help teachers, school and district leaders, and state education agencies collaborate in connecting social and emotional learning (SEL) to effective teaching. An interactive graphic is available to help educators learn about core SEL competencies for both teachers and students, the teaching practices that support social and emotional learning for students, and action steps to better integrate SEL skills into teaching and learning.
GTL Center has also recently released a new professional learning module: “Social and Emotional Learning in the Daily Life of Classrooms”. Great teachers do more than promote students’ academic learning; they teach the whole child. Skills for social and emotional learning are critical to students’ ability to meet new college and career readiness standards. In this module, you will find six hours of hands-on SEL activities and materials that are designed to be customized and adapted to your state or district’s needs. The resources help you:
- Deepen your knowledge and skills for integrating a SEL emphasis into your existing policy and planning work.
- Strengthen connections between social and emotional learning, Common Core State Standards, and your teacher evaluation and professional learning models.
- Learn strategies for supporting school leaders in guiding teachers to reflect on their own teaching practices and SEL competencies.
Finally, GTL Center has released a new online tool for teachers: “Self-Assessing Social and Emotional Instruction and Competencies”. This tool provides a step-by-step self-assessment to help you reflect on your own SEL competencies. It also offers 10 teaching practices that support social and emotional learning for students. It may be used as individual self-assessment or as a group professional learning activity.
