SaveOnEnergy.com® is looking for the best lesson plans for teaching students about energy or sustainability. SaveOnEnergy teaches consumers of all ages about the many aspects of energy in their Learning Center through blog posts, videos and infographics. Plus, their Nico the Ninja guides help teach kids about electrical safety and energy savings.
Now it’s your turn to create a lesson plan for the second annual Teacher Grant that can help kids learn about energy. They encourage lesson plans that vary in scope and topic, and you’re welcome to cite any helpful information you find on the SaveOnEnergy.com Learning Center. All lessons must check off every requirement on the list below to be considered.
- Encompass energy and/or sustainability knowledge.
- Be appropriate for a grade level from kindergarten through eighth grade.
- Include goals and how you plan to measure students’ understanding.
- Include a fully detailed description of the lesson plan, handouts, etc., with a list of all materials needed.
- Be created by one teacher without use of existing prepared educational materials outside of those available on SaveOnEnergy.com.
- Encourage student development through participation opportunities.
Every school subject can apply to energy in one way or another. SaveOnEnergy highly encourages teachers of all subjects to participate in the grant opportunity. There are plenty of ways to think outside of the box when developing a lesson plan. Create an energy-savings song with your music class, develop an energy-related art project or incorporate energy in a math equation. The more creative, the better!

ASCD announced the launch of the #BringingJoyBack back-to-school sweepstakes, with a chance for one educator to win a $500 gift card to the ASCD online store.
“The importance of bringing joy back into schools is important for two reasons,” said Emily Davis, Director of Educator Engagement at ASCD. “First, educators and students are looking to jumpstart the new school year with a refreshed focus; and second, educators know that in recent years the joy of learning has taken a backseat, and it’s time to bring it front and center once again.”
From now until September 16, 2016, educators can enter to win by posting a creative way they’re #BringingJoyBack to their classroom or school on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or YouTube, and by using the #BringingJoyBack hashtag and tagging or mentioning ASCD in the post. On September 21, ASCD will choose a random entry to receive a $500 gift card to the ASCD online store.
To coincide with the sweepstakes, ASCD is also offering educators a 20 percent discount on Engaging Minds in the Classroom: The Surprising Power of Joy by Michael Opitz and Michael Ford, with the discount code JOY20.
